The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Rick Dykstra, Steven John Fletcher, Hon. Hedy Fry, Christiane Gagnon, Tina Keeper, Rob Merrifield and Penny Priddy.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst.

 

Participants present: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: Robert Hindle, Member of the Board of Directors, JDRF Canada and JDRF International; Josée Goulet, President and Chief Executive Officer, JDRF Canada; Chloe Rudichuk, Cure Special Agent; Mitchell Burke, Cure Special Agent.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of silicone gel-filled breast implants.
 

On motion of Nicole Demers, it was agreed, — That, following Health Canada’s decision to grant licences to Mentor and Inamed to once again market their silicone gel-filled breast implants, the Committee requests that: Health Canada officials appear before the Committee to explain their decision; the Committee obtain all of the studies or research that Health Canada considered in making its decision; lastly, that the Committee receive a list of all the researchers who were consulted or whose studies were taken into consideration.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Childhood Obesity.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Ruby Dhalla, — That, following the presentation on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, by departmental officials from the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion in the Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada immediately table the following documents before the Committee: a draft copy of Canada’s Food Guide to be released in 2007 for the preview of the Committee; a list of all the stakeholders, organizations and individuals consulted for the drafting of the Food Guide and their respective suggestions; and a list of the questions put forward for consultations.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 3.

 

On motion of Christiane Gagnon, it was agreed, — Whereas a number of witnesses who appeared before the Standing Committee on Health to discuss the contents of the new Canada’s Food Guide, scheduled for publication in early 2007, made disturbing criticisms of that content, and

In order to determine whether certain opinions that appear to be both relevant and troubling were taken into consideration with a view to making Canada’s Food Guide more effective and better adapted to contemporary reality,

We call upon Health Canada to produce the following papers: the preliminary version of the new Canada’s Food Guide, submitted for consultation purposes in September 2006.
