Meeting No. 23

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Steven John Fletcher, Christiane Gagnon, Tina Keeper and Rob Merrifield.

Acting Members present: Bill Casey for Dave Batters, Yvon Godin for Penny Priddy, James Lunney for Rick Dykstra, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay for Tina Keeper, Pat Martin for Penny Priddy, Hon. Anita Neville for Hon. Carolyn Bennett and Lui Temelkovski for Hon. Hedy Fry.

Associate Members present: Tom Lukiwski.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Analyst ; Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst ; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

Witnesses: Simon Fraser University: Lisa Oliver, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Geography. University of Toronto: Valerie Tarasuk, Professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine. KMH Cardiology and Diagnostic Centres: Arvi Grover, Cardiologist and Director, International Heart Institute.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Childhood Obesity.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Ruby Dhalla moved, — That, following the presentation on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, by departmental officials from the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion in the Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada immediately table the following documents before the Committee: a draft copy of Canada’s Food Guide to be released in 2007 for the preview of the Committee; a list of all the stakeholders, organizations and individuals consulted for the drafting of the Food Guide and their respective suggestions; and a list of the questions put forward for consultations.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

At 5:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
