The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Gerald Keddy, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gérard Asselin, Raynald Blais, Blaine Calkins, Rodger Cuzner, Randy Kamp, Gerald Keddy, James Lunney, Fabian Manning, Bill Matthews, Scott Simms and Peter Stoffer.

 

Acting Members present: Todd Norman Russell for Hon. Lawrence MacAulay and Michael Savage for Rodger Cuzner.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Bevan, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries and Aquaculture Management; George Da Pont, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; Cal Hegge, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources and Corporate Services; Larry Murray, Deputy Minister.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2007-2008 : Votes 1, 5 and 10 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS referred to the Committee on February 27, 2007.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with Larry Murray, George Da Pont, Cal Hegge and David Bevan, answered questions.

 

At 12:33 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:41 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, June 8, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of the Canadian Seal Harvest.
 

It was agreed, — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee print the report on the Seal Harvest with a special cover.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: “Ensuring a Sustainable and Humane Seal Harvest”.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and the analysts be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair or his designate present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the Report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk organize a press conference after the tabling of the Report in the House and that a news release be prepared and distributed.

 

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
