The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Yasmin Ratansi, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Michael D. Chong for Hon. Helena Guergis, Claude DeBellefeuille for Nicole Demers, Luc Harvey for Patricia Davidson and Glen Douglas Pearson for Hon. Belinda Stronach.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nathalie Pothier, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Teachers' Federation: Noreen O'Haire, Director, Professional and Developmental Services. Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario: Sheri Oliver, Director, Strategic Nursing Initiatives. Canadian Teachers' Federation: John Staple, Deputy Secretary General.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 30th, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of economic security of women.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Johanne Deschamps moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on the Status of Women asks the Minister of Status of Women to provide, by Wednesday May 30, 2007, a list of all organizations that applied for grants under the Women's Program, and to identify which grant applications were approved and which were turned down.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Anita Neville, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “provide” the following: “ to the Committee members”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Committee commenced its study of proactive pay equity legislation.
 

Maria Minna moved, — Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommend to the government to immediately introduce proactive pay equity legislation as recommended by the 2004 federal Pay Equity Task Force and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House without delay.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the motion as moved by Maria Minna be deferred to the beginning of the next meeting.

 

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
