The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Guy André, Leon Benoit, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Helena Guergis, Peter Julian, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, John Maloney, Ted Menzies and Lui Temelkovski.

 

Acting Members present: Richard Harris for Pierre Lemieux.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Holden, Analyst; Elizabeth Kuruvila, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Robertson, Director General, North America Trade Policy; Dennis Seebach, Director, Administration and Technology Services; John Clifford, Counsel, Trade Law Bureau; Brice MacGregor, Senior Trade Policy Analyst, Softwood Lumber. Canada Revenue Agency: Ron Hagmann, Manager, Softwood Lumber; Cindy Negus, Manager, Legislative Policy Directorate.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 18, 2006, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-24, An Act to impose a charge on the export of certain softwood lumber products to the United States and a charge on refunds of certain duty deposits paid to the United States, to authorize certain payments, to amend the Export and Import Permits Act and to amend other Acts as a consequence.
 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to consider the Second Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

 

It was agreed, — That, in as much as possible, amendments to Bill C-24 be submitted to the Clerk by Friday October 27, 2006, but that the final date for the submission of amendments to the Clerk be Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at 5 p.m.

That, providing the study on Bill C-24 is complete, the Committee meet for one hour with a parliamentary delegation from the National Assembly of Pakistan led by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, the Hon. Chaudry Amir Hussain, which will be visiting Canada the week of November 20-24, 2006, and that the meeting be followed by a luncheon to be hosted by the Committee; and

That the Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Members of the Standing Committee on National Defence be invited to the meeting and luncheon

That the Committee invite trade officials from countries such as Ireland, Chile, New Zealand and Australia which have developed successful trade policies to appear before it.

 

At 11:05 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
