The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Colin Mayes, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Steven Blaney, Rod Bruinooge, Jean Crowder, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Colin Mayes, Gary Merasty, Hon. Anita Neville, Todd Norman Russell and Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Jim Quinn, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Suzanne Tining, Associate Deputy Minister; Michael Wernick, Deputy Minister.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on Expenditure Plans and the Effectiveness of their implementation by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:03 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:06 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The question: "That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 31,980, for the Committee’s travel to the United Nations Headquarters, New York City, NY, USA in December 2006 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee" was put and was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the committee invite the Cree-Naskapi Commission to appear before the committee to outline their findings and recommendations from the 2006 Report of the Cree-Naskapi Commission.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the committee invite the Correctional Investigator to appear and report on his findings and recommendations with regards to First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from the Annual Report of the Office of the Correctional Investigator 2005-2006.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear from Roger Valley, M.P. on the circumstances faced by the Pikangikum First Nation on December 5, 2006.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
