The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N Centre Block, the Chair, Anthony Rota, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Larry Bagnell, Betty Hinton, Gordon O'Connor, Gilles-A. Perron, Anthony Rota and Peter Stoffer.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Gordon O'Connor.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Royal Canadian Legion: Mary Ann Burdett, Dominion President; Pierre Allard, Director, National Service Bureau.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on January 31, 2005, the Subcommittee commenced its study of the necessity to have an independent Ombudsman for Veterans and associated issues related to Gulf War Veterans.
 

Mary Ann Burdett made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

At 5:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $11,800, for the study of the necessity to have an independent Ombudsman for Veterans and associated issues related to Gulf War Veterans be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $8,000 for a study on the Veterans Review and Appeal Board be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair write to the Minister requesting that she approach Canada Post concerning the possibility of issuing a commemorative stamp celebrating the Royal Canadian Legion's 80th anniversary in 2006.

 

At 5:14 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
