NEW: Cross-country hearings of the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the Standing Committee on Finance
Ottawa, April 04, 2005 -
Today, the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance held hearings in Victoria, British Columbia. Representatives of the Fraser Institute and the Business Council of British Columbia made presentations, as did Professor Rod Dobell and Mr. Dan Doyle, Deputy Minister of Transport for the Government of British Columbia.
“With today’s hearings, we have had presentations from individuals in Eastern, Central and Western Canada”, said Mr. Yvan Loubier, M.P., and Chair of the Subcommittee. “One Taxpayer, three orders of government, desire for high-quality public services and difficulties by some regions in financing these services continue to be emerging themes, as is the need to ensure that governments have the resources they need to provide services within their areas of constitutional responsibility.”
Cross-Canada public hearings will continue in Quebec City on April 11, in Winnipeg on April 18 and in Edmonton on May 2. Hearings in Ottawa will begin on April 6. Previously, hearings were held in Halifax, Toronto and Regina. Presentations in these locations were made by the Hon. Mitchell Murphy, Treasurer for the Province of Prince Edward Island, the Hon. Greg Sobara, Minister of Finance for the Province of Ontario, Mr. John Tory, Leader for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Mr. Michael Prue, Finance Critic for the New Democratic Party of Ontario, the Hon. Lorne Calvert, Premier for the Province of Saskatchewan and Mr. Brad Wall, Leader for the Saskatchewan Party.
