The Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209 West Block, the Chair, Navdeep Bains, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Navdeep Bains, Diane Bourgeois, Hon. Ed Broadbent, Stockwell Day, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan and Hon. Paddy Torsney.

 

Other Members present: Jason Kenney and Hon. David Kilgour.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Human Rights Watch: Kenneth Roth, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Subcommittee proceeded to a briefing session on Global Human Rights.
 

Kenneth Roth made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee meet on May 4, 2005 on the International Policy Statement and the Legislative Mandate of CIDA and that representatives of NGO's and think tanks be invited as witnesses.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee meet on May 11, 2005, to discuss mining in developing countries and that witnesses from the Department of Natural Resources, Foreign Affairs, International Trade and from the Mining Association of Canada be invited to appear.

 

It was agreed, — That representatives from TVI Pacific Inc. appear on May 18, 2005.

 

It was agreed, — That at its June 1, 2005 meeting the Subcommittee invite various NGOs to discuss corporate social responsibility in developing countries.

 

It was agreed, — That the June 8, 2005 meeting with the Hon. Aileen Carroll be on the CIDA Facility Fund Program and the International Policy Statement.

 

It was agreed, — That should a meeting be held on June 15, 2005, the Subcommittee will examine human rights in Haiti.

 

At 5:35 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
