The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Marc Boulianne, Michael Chong, Paul Crête, John Duncan, Hon. Marlene Jennings, Brian Masse, Lynn Myers, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: James Rajotte for John Duncan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Andrew Kitching, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association: Paul Methot, Vice President, Pizza Pizza Ltd.; James McIlroy, Counsel. Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers: Pierre R. Alvarez, President; Nick Schultz, Vice-President, Regulatory and Transportation Policy and General Counsel. Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Nancy Hughes Anthony, President and Chief Executive Officer; John Clifford, Vice-Chair, Competition Law and Policy Task Force. Public Interest Advocacy Centre: Michael Janigan, Executive Director and General Counsel. Canadian Real Estate Association: Pierre Beauchamp, Chief Executive Officer; Catherine McKenna, Competition Counsel. Canadian Council of Chief Executives: John R. Dillon, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs, and General Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Suzanne Fortier to the position of President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council which was referred to the Committee on Wednesday, November 16, 2005.
 

Jerry Pickard moved, — That the Chair report to the House that this Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of Suzanne Fortier as President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and finds her competent to perform the duties of the position to which she has been nominated.

 

On motion of John Duncan, it was agreed, — That the motion of Jerry Pickard be amended by replacing the word "examined" with the word "considered".

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, November 16, 2004, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Competition Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

Paul Methot, Pierre Alvarez, Nancy Hughes Anthony and John Clifford made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:00 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:02 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Michael Janigan, Pierre Beauchamp and John Dillon made statements and, with Catherine McKenna, answered questions.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
