The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Colin Carrie, Jean Crowder, Ruby Dhalla, Steven John Fletcher, Marcel Gagnon, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield and Hon. Robert Thibault.

 

Acting Members present: Odina Desrochers for Marcel Gagnon.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Medical Reform Group: Joel Lexchin, Associate Professor, York University School of Health Policy and Management.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, May 19, 2005, the Committee resumed its study on silicone gel-filled breast implants.
 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Health request a copy of the epidemiological study on silicone gel-filled implants, which was begun in 1996 and which is now completed and due to be published in a medical journal in November 2005, according to the testimony of Ms. Vivian Ellis of the Public Health Agency of Canada, in her appearance before the Committee on October 27, 2005.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Health establish a subcommittee tasked with monitoring the development of the Assisted Human Reproduction Regulations.

The subcommittee will consist of one(1) representative of each opposition party, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, and the Chair of the Standing Committee.

The subcommittee will meet with the officials responsible for developing the Assisted Human Reproduction Regulations every two months until the Regulations are completed.

The subcommittee will be required to report to the Standing Committee every six months until the Regulations are completed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, the Committee resumed its study on Prescription Drugs.
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 10:28 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
