The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stockwell Day, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Hon. Dan McTeague, Ted Menzies, Pierre A. Paquette, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson and Belinda Stronach.

 

Acting Members present: Don Boudria for Maurizio Bevilacqua, Peter Julian for Alexa McDonough and Paddy Torsney for Beth Phinney.

 

Associate Members present: John Cannis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; James Lee, Analyst; Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Carleton University: Andrew Cohen, Professor, School of Journalism and Communication. Women's National Commission: Salama Abdalrsul, Participant, Irqi Women's Internship Programme; Taa'meem Abd-ul-Hussein, Participant, Iraqi Women's Internship Programme; Ula A. Ibrahim, Participant, Iraqi Women's Internship Programme; Surood Mohammed Falih Ahmmad, Participant, Iraqi Women's Internship Programme; Nassreen Rahim, Participant, Iraqi Women's Internship Programme; Zainab H. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 20, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of the International Policy Review.
 

Andrew Cohen made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:13 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 20, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of Relations with Countries of the Muslim World.
 

The participants of the Iraqi Women's Internship Programme answered questions.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:49 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That consideration of the First Report of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment be postponed until the next meeting of the Committee.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the debate on the motion sponsored by Ms. McDonough concerning the Eritrea-Ethiopia boundary question be now adjourned until the next meeting of the Committee.

 

Stockwell Day moved, — That, in the opinion of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the government should demand that the State of Israel be afforded the same right of any other member nation to participate in the deliberations of all United Nations bodies, and that the Chair report the same to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned, until the next meeting of the Committee.

 

Stockwell Day moved, — That the Committee adopt the draft Taiwan-WHO report as its report to the House and that the Chair present the said report to the House.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on division.

 

At 11:07 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
