MINISTER OF STATE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES, TO APPEAR BEFORE THE HOUSE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE ON KYOTO

Ottawa, April 18, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Hon. John Godfrey, Minister of State, Infrastructure and Communities, will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is Canada’s implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.

Infrastructure Canada coordinates federal efforts to build a “New Deal for Cities and Communities.” The department also makes billions of dollars of strategic investments in sustainable infrastructure projects through partnerships that meet local community needs. One of the goals of these programs is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The newly released “Project Green” climate change plan also includes billions of dollars of support for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This meeting provides an opportunity to discuss the role of Infrastructure Canada in helping to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions and how these efforts will be coordinated with Project Green.

The meeting is to take place Thursday, 21 April between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in Room 237-C, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
