Minister of Environment to appear before the House Environment committee on Estimates

Ottawa, April 8, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Honourable Stephane Dion, Minister of the Environment, will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2006.

One of the main priorities of the Department of Environment Canada, as outlined in its Report on Plans and Priorities is climate change. Canada is currently in the process of determining how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and an updated plan is to be released on 13 April, 2005, the day before the meeting. The Committee is also currently undertaking an in-depth study of how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions.

This meeting provides an opportunity to discuss departmental expenditures and priorities with an emphasis on meeting Canada’s climate change challenge.

The meeting is to take place Thursday, 14 April between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in Room 253-D, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
