NEWS RELEASE

Minister of Natural Resources to appear before the House Environment Committee on Kyoto

Ottawa, March 30, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Honourable John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is “Canada's Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol - Towards a More Effective Plan.”

The Kyoto Protocol came into force on 16 February, 2005. Canada is currently in the process of determining how to meet its Kyoto target and there is widespread agreement that the Government of Canada's 2002 Climate Change Plan needs to be changed in order to make it more effective. The Committee is currently engaged in an in-depth study on how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions.

The Kyoto Protocol and the climate change issue cannot be addressed without changes in the way we use energy. The Department of Natural Resources specialises in the sustainable development of energy and is therefore the key department in the government’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions toward meeting the Kyoto target.

The meeting is to take place Tuesday, 5 April between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in room 209, West Block on Parliament Hill.
