Minister of Finance to appear before the House Environment Committee on Kyoto

Ottawa, February 7, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is “Canada's Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol - Fiscal Reform and Environment”.

The Kyoto Protocol is to come into force on 16 February, 2005. Canada is clearly behind its Kyoto target and there is widespread agreement that the government’s 2002 Climate Change Plan for Canada needs to be changed in order to make it more effective. The Committee is at the start of an in depth study on how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions. A major focus of the study is how fiscal reform can be used as a policy tool to achieve this goal.

The televised meeting is to take place Tuesday, 8 February between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. in room 237-C, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
