The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Andrew Telegdi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Diane Ablonczy, David A. Anderson, Colleen Beaumier, Roger Clavet, Meili Faille, Hedy Fry, Helena Guergis, Rahim Jaffer, Bill Siksay, Andrew Telegdi and Lui Temelkovski.

 

Acting Members present: Nina Grewal for Inky Mark.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Benjamin Dolin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Dental Association: Alfred Dean, President; Irwin Fefergrad, Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. Canadian Council of Professional Engineers: Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer. Canadian Medical Association: Albert Schumacher, President. Canadian Council of Professional Engineers: Deborah Wolfe, Director, Education, Outreach and Research. Canadian Dental Association: Benoit Soucy, Director, Membership and Professional Services. Canadian Medical Association: W. Todd Watkins, Director, Office of Professional Services, Professional Affairs Department.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 27, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of Recognition of the International Experience and Credentials of Immigrants.
 

Alfred Dean, Marie Lemay and Dr. Albert Schumacher made statements and with, Irwin Fefergrad, Benoit Soucy, Deborah Wolfe and Dr. W. Todd Watkins, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees be invited to address the topic of the SOS Viet Phi on February 22, 2005 from 12:30 p.m. to 13:00 p.m.

That the Committee hear from Departmental Officials on February 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., to address the topic of SOS Viet Phi.

That the Committee commence clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-2 on February 24, 2005 and that Departmental officials be invited to appear from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

That the Committee hear from the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration on February 24, 2005 from 12:30 p.m. to 13:30 p.m.

That the Minister and Deputy Minister be invited to appear on the Departmental Supplementary Estimates on Tuesday, March 8, 2005

That the Committee travel schedule be amended by the following:

  • Monday, April 18 - St. John's, Newfoundland
  • Tuesday, April 19 - Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • Wednesday, April 20 - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
  • Thursday, April 21 - Fredericton, New Brunswick
  • Friday, April 22 - Montreal, Québec

That the Committee travel throughout Canada from April 4 to April 22, 2005.

That the Committee invite Ottawa-based organizations and individuals to address the Committee on the following topics:

  • 1. A New Citizenship Act
  • 2. Recognition of the International Experience and Credentials of Immigrants
  • 3. Family Reunification Issues

and that these meetings be held on March 10, 22 and 24, 2005.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be concurred in.

 

At 1:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
