The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Andrew Telegdi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David A. Anderson, Meili Faille, Hedy Fry, Helena Guergis, Rahim Jaffer, Bill Siksay, Andrew Telegdi and Lui Temelkovski.

 

Acting Members present: Nicole Demers for Roger Clavet, Nina Grewal for Inky Mark and Mario Silva for Colleen Beaumier.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Benjamin Dolin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic: Avvy Yao-Yao Go, Director; Clara Ho, Staff Lawyer. Canadian Council for Refugees: Nick Summers, President; Amy Casipullai, Vice-President. Human Rights Action Committee: Sanjiv Kumar, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on Family reunification issues, Regularization of people in Canada without legal status and Refugee issues.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:19 a.m., the Vice-Chair, Meili Faille took the Chair.

 

At 10:25, Andrew Telegdi took the Chair.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Meili Faille moved, — Whereas

The Refugee Appeal Division is included in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;

Parliament has passed the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and can therefore expect that it be implemented; and

The House of Commons and parliamentarians have a right to expect that the Government of Canada will honour its commitments;

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration requests that the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, implement the Refugee Appeal Division without delay.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the motion of Meili Faille would be discussed at the Committee's next meeting.

 

At 11:04 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
