The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Marlene Catterall, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Gord Brown, Sarmite Bulte, Marlene Catterall, Maka Kotto, Marc Lemay, Deepak Obhrai, Bev Oda, Gary Schellenberger, Mario Silva, Scott Simms and David Smith.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Analyst; Sam Banks, Analyst. As Individual: David Black, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Jean-Pierre Blais, Assistant Deputy Minister, Cultural Affairs; Jean-François Bernier, Director General, Film, Video and Sound Recording; Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Director, Film and Video Policy and Programs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session on Canadian Feature Film Industry.
 

On motion of Gord Brown, it was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to sit in public.

 

Jean-Pierre Blais made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

 

Scott Simms moved, — That the committee report to the House of Commons on the Auditor General report, requiring Canadian Heritage report to the Committee on the development of a Strategy and Action plan, including time frames, in response to the Auditor General recommendations on the protection of cultural heritage and that the report also include the results of consultations with other departments and Agencies.

 

Sarmite Bulte moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words Canadian Heritage the following: Environment Canada and Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Sarmite Bulte and it was agreed to.
