The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:28 p.m. this day, in Room 209 West Block, the Chair, Marlene Catterall, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gord Brown, Sarmite Bulte, Marlene Catterall, Wajid Khan, Maka Kotto, Marc Lemay, Bev Oda and Gary Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: John Reynolds for Deepak Obhrai, Francis Scarpaleggia for Scott Simms and Peter Stoffer for Charlie Angus.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Stephen Owen, Minister of State (Sport).

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Jacques Paquette, Assistant Deputy Minister, International and intergovernmental Affairs; Tom Scrimger, Director General, Sport Canada.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 
On motion of Bev Oda, it was agreed – That notwithstanding the motion adopted by the Committee with respect to the renewal of the program Tomorrow starts today on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 the new motion read as follows: In response to the request by the artists and cultural communities across Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for the renewal of Tomorrow Starts today, the Minister of Canadian Heritage to publicly announce before the end of this week and to formally report to the House upon the first week of the resumption of the House the intent of this government to renew or not renew this program and whether it will be renewed as a A based program or not.
 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(7), the Committee commenced consideration of the Report on Plans and Priorities 2004-2005 du ministère du Patrimoine canadien and Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Study on Performance Report for the period ending March 31, 2004.
 

The Minister made an opening statement and with Tom Scrimger answered questions.

 
The Committee resumed consideration of matters related to Committee Business.

On motion of Peter Stoffer, it was agreed that the proposed Budget in the amount of $309,033.00 for the Committee's Study on Feature Film Industry in Canada be adopted and that the Chair present this Budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
