The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 4:09 p.m. this day, in Room 705 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Marlene Catterall, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Sarmite Bulte, Marlene Catterall, Wajid Khan, Maka Kotto, Marc Lemay, Bev Oda, Gary Schellenberger and Scott Simms.

 

Acting Members present: Gerald Keddy for Deepak Obhrai.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Analyst; Sam Banks, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Susan Peterson, Associate Deputy Minister; Bruce Manion, Assistant Deputy Minister, Planning and Corporate Affairs; Cynthia White-Thornley, Director General, Arts Policy Branch.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 
On motion of Gary Schellenberger, it wat agreed, That the Terms of Reference for the Commmittee's Study on Feature Film Industry in Canada and the schedule of meetings for this study be adopted.
 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of Canadian Heritage program "Tomorrow Starts Today".
 

Susan Peterson made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

 

On motion of Bev Oda, it was agreed by unanimous consent,— That, in response to the request by the artists and cultural communities across Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for the renewal of Tomorrow Starts today, the Minister of Canadian Heritage report in the House the intent of this government to renew or not renew this program before the end of this session of the House and whether it will be renewed as an A based program or not.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee retain the professional services of David Black, as a consultant to assist in organizing the work of the Committee in relation to its study of the Canadian Feature Film Industry for the period of January 5 to March 31st, 2005 at a per diem rate of $ 595.00 for a total amount not to exceed $ 19,635.00.

 

At 6:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
