The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 209 West Block, the Chair, Marlene Catterall, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Gord Brown, Sarmite Bulte, Marlene Catterall, Wajid Khan, Maka Kotto, Bev Oda, Pablo Rodriguez, Gary Schellenberger and Scott Simms.

 

Acting Members present: Stéphane Bergeron for Marc Lemay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Analyst; Sam Banks, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Susan Peterson, Associate Deputy Minister; Jacques Paquette, Assistant Deputy Minister, International and intergovernmental Affairs; Artur Wilczynski, Director, International relations and outreach, International and Intergovernmental Affairs. Department of International Trade Canada: Doug George, Director, Intellectual Property, Information and Technology Trade Policy Division. Department of Foreign Affairs: Michael Brock, Director General, International Cultural Relations Bureau. Coalition for Cultural Diversity: Pierre Curzi, Co-Chair, Chair, Union des artistes; Maureen Parker, Vice-President, Executive Director, Writers Guild of Canada; Robert Pilon, Executive Vice-President. International Network for Cultural Diversity: Garry Neil, Executive Director. As an Individual: Peter S. Grant, Senior Partner, McCarthy Tétrault and Member of Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade. Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade for Cultural Industries: Ken Stein, Chair, Cultural Industries and Vice-President, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Shaw Communications.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and as agreed on November 22, 2004, the Committee commenced its examination of Canada's position to UNESCO on the preliminary draft of the Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions.
 

Susan Peterson made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Maureen Parker, Pierre Curzi, Ken Stein, Garry Neil and Peter S. Grant made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
