Meeting No. 10

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Hon. Don Boudria, Bonnie Brown, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Deborah Grey, Hon. David Kilgour, Hon. Gilbert Normand, Greg Thompson and Hon. Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Bev Desjarlais for Svend Robinson.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst ; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That, further to the government’s request for input and direction from committees as to which key government appointments should be subject to prior parliamentary review, the Standing Committee on Health be provided each September with a list of appointments due for renewal in the coming twelve months; and that upon receipt of the list, all members of the committee be afforded the opportunity to request a review of one or more positions by the committee; and that a first such list be provided as soon as possible, for a period extending from May to the end of August 2004.

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite Mr. James Lunney, MP, and officials from Health Canada, to appear before the committee on Thursday, April 22, 2004, to discuss Bill C-420, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act.

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with the Minister of Health on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, on the subject of the Main Estimates 2004-2005, and with the Auditor General of Canada on Thursday, April 29, 2004 on Chapter 2 (Health Canada – Regulation of Medical Devices) of her report tabled in the House on March 30, 2004.

At 11:29 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
