Meeting No. 45

Wednesday, May 14, 2003

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Brian Fitzpatrick, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Dan McTeague, James Rajotte and Brent St. Denis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the House of Commons: Hon. Stephen Owen, Secretary of State (Western Economic Diversification).

Witness: From the Department of Industry: Oryssia J. Lennie, Deputy Minister, Western Economic Diversification.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 2003, the Committee resumed consideration of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2004, Votes, 130 and 135, under INDUSTRY.

The Secretary of State made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:59 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:02 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 5:03 p.m., the Order of the House of Commons dated Monday, May 12, 2003 being read as follows:

Pursuant to Standing Order 39(5), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the failure of the Ministry to respond to the following question was deemed referred to the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology:

Q-179 – Mr. Ritz (Battlefords—Lloydminster) – For the past five years, can the government provide a breakdown of federal research funding, including research projects and infrastructure, by university, including the name of the recipient, a brief description, the type of funding and the amount?

Serge Marcil, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry made a statement.

Debate arose there on.

At 5:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
