MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 28

Tuesday, April 8, 2003

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Cummins, R. John Efford, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Jean-Yves Roy, Tom Wappel, Bob Wood.

Acting Member present:  Yvon Godin for Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté and Alan Nixon, research officers.

Witnesses: From the "Association des crabiers acadiens": Joel Gionet, President. From the "Association des crabiers de la Baie": Daniel Desbois. From the "Association des crabiers gaspésiens Inc.": Marc Couture, President. From the "Crabiers du Nord-Est Inc.": Peter Noel, Vice-President.  From the "Regroupement des pêcheurs professionnels des Îles-de-la-Madeleine": Paul Boudreau. From the P.E.I. Snow Crab Fishermen Inc.: Doug Cameron, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study on the snow crab fishery (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, March 27, 2003, Meeting No. 25).

Joel Gionet and Peter Noel made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

On motion of Carmen Provenzano, it was agreed,—That the proposed budget in the amount of $9,600, in relation to the Committee’s study of Atlantic fisheries issues for the period of May and June 2003, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

At 12:43 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
