Meeting No. 20

Monday, February 10, 2003

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 1:39 p.m. this day, in the Nova Scotia AB Room, Casino Nova Scotia Hotel, Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Vice-Chair, Jerry Pickard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Diane Ablonczy, Yvon Charbonneau, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Jerry Pickard.

Other Member present: Wendy Lill.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: David Goetz, research officer.

Witnesses: From the Brunswick Street United Church: Rev. Gus Pendleton. From the Metro Immigrant Settlement Association: Claudette Legault, Executive Director; Mira Musanovic, Settlement Worker; Anna Gregus, Manager, Settlement Unit. From the North End Community Health Centre: Paul O'Hara. From the Multicultural Association of Nova Scotia: Sylvia Parris, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study of Canada's Settlement and Integration Programs.

Claudette Legault, Rev. Gus Pendleton and Paul O’Hara made statements and, with Mira Musanovic and Anna Gregus, answered questions.

At 3:24 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:01 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Sylvia Parris made a statement and answered questions.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Friday, November 8, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-18, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, November 21, 2002, Meeting No. 6).

At 4:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
