Meeting No. 36

Thursday, June 5, 2003

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:10 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Gérard Binet, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Claude Duplain, Mark Eyking, Rick Laliberte, John Maloney, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Members present: Odina Desrochers for Louis Plamondon; Carol Skelton  for Howard Hilstrom.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Dennis Laycraft, Executive Vice-President; Stan Eby, Vice-president; Jim Caldwell, Director, Government Affairs; Brad Wildeman, Chair, Foreign Trade Committee; Ben Thorlakson, Director; From the Alberta Beef Producers: Arno Doerksen, Chairman.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the BSE Disease Investigation.

Stan Eby, Dennis Laycraft and Ben Thorlakson made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
