Meeting No. 26

Thursday, April 10, 2003

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Claude Duplain, Louis Plamondon, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Rory McAlpine, Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Andréa Lyon, Director, Tariffs and Market Access Division. From the Department of Finance: Patrick Hines, Senior Economist, International Trade Policy Division. From the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: Mike Jordan, Director General, Trade Policy and Interpretation Directorate, Custom Branch; Ignatius Leron, Manager, International Nomenclature Development Unit, Custom Branch. From the Dairy Farmers of Canada: Leo Bertoia, President; Richard Doyle, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider the importation of dairy substitutes (butter oil / sugar blends).

Rory McAlpine and Andréa Lyon made opening statements and with Mike Jordan and Ignatius Leron answered questions.

Leo Bertoia made an opening statement and with the other witness, answered questions.

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
