MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 88

Tuesday, June 4, 2002

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in camera at 9:14 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Stéphane Bergeron, Bev Desjarlais, Cheryl Gallant, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Joe McGuire, Dan McTeague, James Rajotte, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Lalita Acharya, Geoffrey P. Kieley and James McQueen, Research Officers.

Witness: As Individual: Ronald N. Kostoff, United State Citizen.

The Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee invite officials from Industry Canada and Statistics Canada to discuss the topic of innovation, productivity and growth.

It was agreed, -- That, pursuant to Standing Order 97.1, the Chair present a report to the House requesting an extension of thirty (30) sitting days for the Committee to study Bill C-248 An Act to Amend the Competition Act.

It was agreed, -- That the Clerk communicate with the Ontario Forest Industries Association (OFIA) seeking information further to the letter to the Chair in which the OFIA request to appear before the Committee on the topic of U.S. softwood lumber duties.

It was agreed, -- That the Ethics Counsellor be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 or at the earliest opportunity after the new guidelines are made public.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee undertake to review at its earliest opportunity, the Patent Act with respect to the Notice of Compliance Regulations concerning patented medicines with particular emphasis on automatic injunction provisions”.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee invite officials from Industry Canada to discuss the Report on Financing Data for small and medium enterprises.

At 10:00 a.m., the Committee proceeded to meet via a videoconference.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the Three Federal Granting Agencies, Peer Review Funding, and the Canada Research Chairs Program (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Meeting No. 39).

Ronald Kostoff made a presentation and answered questions.

At 11:25 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

At 11:31 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
