Tuesday, October 30, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:17 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Stéphane Bergeron, Claude Drouin, Charlie Penson, James Rajotte, Andy Savoy, Brent St. Denis, Paddy Torsney, Joseph Volpe and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Lalita Acharya and James McQueen, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Michael N. Murphy, Senior Vice-President, Policy; Robert Keyes, Senior Vice-President, International Division. From the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters: Jayson Myers, Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist. From the Canadian Federation of Independent Business: Catherine Swift, President & Chief Executive Officer; Garth Whyte, Senior Vice-President, National Affairs. From the Canadian Steel Producers' Association: Barry Lacombe, President; Donald K. Belch, Director, Government Relations. From the Mining Association of Canada: Gordon Peeling, President and Chief Executive Officer; Dan Paszkowski, Vice-President, Economic Affairs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the Economic Impact on Canada of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks.

Michael N. Murphy, Robert Keyes, Jayson Myers, Catherine Swift and Garth Whyte each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Barry Lacombe and Gordon Peeling each made an opening statement and with Donald K. Belch answered questions.

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
