Meeting No. 40

Wednesday, October 17, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Stéphane Bergeron, Claude Drouin, Walt Lastewka, Dan McTeague, Charlie Penson, James Rajotte, Brent St. Denis, Chuck Strahl, Joseph Volpe, Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Geoffrey P. Kieley, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Independent Petroleum Marketers Association: Bob MacMinn, Executive Vice-President; Dave Collins, President. From the "Association québécoise des indépendants du pétrole": René Blouin, President-Executive Director; Pierre Crevier, President, "Pétroles Crevier” and Member of the AQUIP's Economic Affairs Committee. From the Canadian Trucking Alliance: Graham Cooper, Senior Vice-President; Ron Lennox, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, May 3, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-23, An Act to amend the Competition Act and the Competition Tribunal Act (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, October 4, 2001, Meeting No. 37).

The witnesses made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee hold special hearings on the economic impact on Canada of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee approve admission fees of $422.65 for each of the two researchers to attend the Conference on R&D Canada’s Challenge held in Ottawa on November 13, 2001.

At 5:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
