Tuesday, February 19, 2002

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Judi Longfield, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Raymonde Folco, Monique Guay, Dale Johnston, Judi Longfield, Gurbax Malhi, Serge Marcil, Joe McGuire, Werner Schmidt, Carol Skelton, Diane St-Jacques and Alan Tonks.

Acting Member(s) present: Alexa McDonaugh for Libby Davies and Pat Martin for Libby Davies.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr and Julie Mackenzie, Research Officers.

Witness(es): From the Canadian Labour Congress: Hassan Yussuff, Executive Vice-President; David Onyalo, National Director, Anti-Racism & Human Rights Department; Penni Richmond, National Director, Women's and Human Rights Department. From the Canadian Union of Public Employees: Harminder Singh Magon, Anti-Racism Coordinator. From the Public Service Alliance of Canada: Johanne Labine, Programs Officer. From the "Confédération des syndicats nationaux": Claudette Carbonneau, Vice-president; Raymonde Leblanc, Union advisor. From the Canadian Auto Workers Union: Raj Dhaliwal, Director, Human Rights Department.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference dated December 3rd, 2001 and to section 44 of the Employment Equity Act, the Committee resumed consideration of the statutory review of the Act (See minutes of Proceedings of December11, 2001 – Meeting No.44)

Hassan Yussuff, Harminder Singh Magon and Johanne Labine made statements and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 12:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Claudette Carbonneau and Raj Dhaliwal made opening statements and answered questions.

At 1:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
