Meeting No. 68

Wednesday, May 29, 2002

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Sarmite Bulte, Rodger Cuzner, Christiane Gagnon, John Harvard, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln, Dennis Mills, Chuck Strahl and Tony Tirabassi.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Terrence Thomas, research officers.  Consultant:  David Black.

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Michael Wernick, Associate Deputy Minister; Bruce Stockfish, Director General, Copyright Policy; Jeff Richstone, Legal Counsel; Michael Himsl, Senior Policy Analyst. From the Department of Industry: Michèle Gervais, Director, Intellectual Property Policy; Bruce Couchman, Senior Legal Analyst, Intellectual Property Policy; Anna Marie Labelle, Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property Law Group.

The Order of Reference dated Friday, February 22, 2002, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-48, An Act to amend the Copyright Act be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

The Chair called Clause 1.

Michael Wernick made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
