Meeting No. 18

Thursday, June 7, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cummins, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Gerald Keddy, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Guy St-Julien, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Appearing: From Indian Affairs and NorthernDevelopment Canada: The Honourable Robert D. Nault, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs.

Witness: From Indian Affairs and NorthernDevelopment Canada: W. Thomas Molloy, Chief Federal Negotiator, Atlantic Claim for Marshall.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), briefing on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of Fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

Robert Nault made a statement and answered questions.

Thomas Molloy made a statement and answered questions.

On the motion of Paul Steckle, it was unanimously agreed, That the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans recommend that the Minister of Natural Resources appoint a qualified person from the fisheries to a vacant position on the Canada - Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board at the earliest opportunity.

At 10:48 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
