Meeting No. 14

Tuesday, May 15, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 6:17 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cummins, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

Acting Member present: Loyola Hearn for Gerald Keddy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: The Hon. Herb Dhaliwal, Minister.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Wayne Wouters, Deputy Minister; Dr. David Bevan, Director General, Resource Management; Robert Bergeron, Director General, Small Craft Harbours; Liseanne Forand, Assistant Deputy Minister Policy; John Adams, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; Andrew Smith, Senior Financial Manager; Matthew King, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister; Oceans Sector; John Davis, Assistant Deputy Minister, Science Sector.

Pursuant to an Order from the House of Commons dated Tuesday, February 27, 2001 the Committee proceeded to examine the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 -- Vote 1, under Fisheries and Oceans.

On the motion of Suzanne Tremblay, it was agreed, - That the Committee express its appreciation to the staff for its efficient organization of the Committee's recent trip to the East Coast.

The Chair called Vote 1 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS.

Herb Dhaliwal made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 8:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
