Meeting No. 20

Tuesday, May 8, 2001

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, Paul Forseth, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberte, Bob Mills, Karen Redman, Julian Reed, Andy Savoy, Hélène Scherrer.

Acting Member present: Guy St-Julien for Aileen Carroll.

Senator present: Charlie Watt.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Monique Hébert and Tim Williams, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Council of Yukon First Nations: Daryn R. Leas, Lawyer; Robert Jackson, Coordinator. From the Fisheries Joint Management Committee: Larry Carpenter, Chairman. From the Nunavik Hunting, Fishing & Trapping Association: Paulusi Novalinga, President; Robbie Watt, President, Avataq Cultural Institute. From Makivik Corporation: Johnny Peters, Vice President; Joseph Agma, Interpreter; Johnny Adams, Chairman, Kativik Regional Government; Stas Olpinski, Advisor.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 20, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-5, An Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, March 22, 2001, Meeting No. 6).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

On motion of Rick Laliberté, it was agreed, - - That the Committee adopt the budget in the amount of $ 17,414.00, for the purpose of travel to Paris, France, from May 13 to 17, 2001 to attend an OECD conference on environmental and economic issues.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
