Mr. Goodale (Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board) for Ms. Copps (Minister of Canadian Heritage), seconded by Mr. Gagliano (Minister of Public Works and Government Services), moved, -- That the Bill be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

Debate arose thereon.

GOVERNMENT ORDERS

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Ms. Copps (Minister of Canadian Heritage), seconded by Mr. Gagliano (Minister of Public Works and Government Services), -- That Bill C-27, An Act respecting the national parks of Canada, be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

The debate continued.

The question was put on the motion and, pursuant to Standing Order 45, the recorded division was deferred until Monday, May 8, 2000, at the ordinary hour of daily adjournment.

PRIVATE MEMBERS' BUSINESS

At 1:14 p.m., by unanimous consent, the House proceeded to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

Ms. Alarie (Louis-Hébert), seconded by Mrs. Tremblay (Rimouski -- Mitis), moved, -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should make labelling of genetically modified foods compulsory, and should carry out exhaustive studies on the long-term effects of these foods on health and the environment. (Private Members' Business M-230)

Debate arose thereon.

NOTICE OF MOTION

Mr. Boudria (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons) gave notice of the intention to move a motion at the next sitting of the House, pursuant to Standing Order 78(3), for the purpose of allotting a specified number of days or hours for the consideration and disposal of the second reading of Bill C-11, An Act to authorize the divestiture of the assets of, and to dissolve, the Cape Breton Development Corporation, to amend the Cape Breton Development Corporation Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

PRIVATE MEMBERS' BUSINESS

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Ms. Alarie (Louis-Hébert), seconded by Mrs. Tremblay (Rimouski -- Mitis), -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should make labelling of genetically modified foods compulsory, and should carry out exhaustive studies on the long-term effects of these foods on health and the environment.
