MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 22

Tuesday, December 7, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Claude Drouin, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Bill Gilmour, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Geoffrey Robins, Principal, Audit Operations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the following: Chapter 20 of the Report of the Auditor General of Canada (Fisheries and Oceans - Pacific Salmon: Sustainability of the Fisheries).

Denis Desautels made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

On motion of John Cummins, it was agreed, - That the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans request an Order of Reference to travel from February 13 to February 23, 2000 to British Columbia and the State of Washington, to commence their comprehensive study on Aquaculture, and their statutory obligation, to undertake a review of the Oceans Act and their study on aboriginal fishing strategy.

And, - That the said Committee be composed of two (2) Reform Members, one (1) Bloc québécois Member, one (1) NDP Member, one (1) PC Member and five (5) Liberal Members and the necessary staff to accompany the Committee.

On motion of Carmen Provenzano, it was agreed, - That the travel budget in the amount of $166,961.90 be approved.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
