Thursday, November 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 1:17 p.m. this day, at the Beausejour Hotel in Moncton, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Wayne Easter, Bill Gilmour, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Charlie Power, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the Maritime Fishermen's Union: Michael Belliveau, Executive Secretary; Frank McLaughlin, President; Ronald Cormier, Vice President. From the Miramichi Salmon Association Inc.: J.W. Bud Bird, President. From the Mawiw Council of First Nations: Leon Sock, President; Susan Levi, Coordinator. From the St. Mary's First Nation: Chief Arthur Bear. From the Union of New Brunswick Indians: Chief Arthur Bear; Peter Birney, Coordinator, Biologist; Danny Thériault, Advisor. From the United Nations Human Rights Commission: Junior Charles Bernard, Ambassador for Mi'Kmaq; Charles Marble, Fisherman; Charles Bernard, Fisherman.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
