Meeting No. 41

Tuesday, November 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Ray Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Roy Bailey, Ray Bonin, Roy Cullen, Stan Dromisky, Claude Drouin, Michel Guimond, Ovid Jackson, Stan Keyes, Paul Mercier, Lee Morrison, Lou Sekora.

Acting Members present: Libby Davies for Bev Desjarlais; Charles Power for Bill Casey.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Researcher; from the Committees and Legislative Services Directorate: Susan Baldwin, Legislative Clerk.

Witnesses: From the Department of Transport: Ron Jackson, Assistant Deputy Minister; Safety and Security; Terry Burtch, Director General, Rail Safety Legislation and Program Development; Gordon Chapman, Director; Rail Safety Legislation and Program Development; Louis Gautier, Counsel, Legal Services.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Friday, November 20, 1998, consideration of Bill C-58, An Act to amend the Railway Safety Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act.

On Clause I

Mr. Ron Jackson made an opening statement and, with Terry Burtch, Gordon Chapman and Louis Gautier, answered questions.

It was agreed,--That, the Committee meet from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 1998 to hear witnesses on Bill C-58 and, depending on the number of witnesses, clause by clause will take place Tuesday afternoon or evening.

It was agreed,--That, the Committee invite witnesses on Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at 3:30 p.m. for a briefing session on the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
