Meeting No. 16

Tuesday, March 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met at 3:34 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Raymond Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Murray Calder, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Claude Drouin, Joe Fontana, Ivan Grose, Michel Guimond, Inky Mark.

Acting Members present: Elsie Wayne for Bill Casey; Antoine Dubé for Paul Mercier.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: John Christopher and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

Witnesses: Railway Association of Canada: Martin D. Lacombe,Vice President; Cynthia M. Hick, Secretary-Treasurer; Roger K. Cameron, General Manager, Public Affairs. "Coalition sur l’utilisation accrue du rail": Richard Couture, President; Louis-François Garceau, Secretary-Treasurer.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of a review of passenger rail services offered by Via Rail and the means to revitalize this important mode of transportation within the context of the fiscal and environmental concerns facing the Government (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, February 17, 1998, Meeting No. 10).

Martin D. Lacombe and Cynthia Hick made opening statements and, with Roger Cameron, answered questions.

Richard Couture and Louis-François Garceau made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:30 o’clock p.m.., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
