Meeting No. 8

Thursday, March 18, 1999

The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Carolyn Bennett, presiding.

Member(s) of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Deborah Grey and Wendy Lill.

Acting Member(s) present: Larry McCormick for Nancy Karetak-Lindell. From 4:31 p.m. to 5:37 p.m., Peter Mancini for Wendy Lill.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Sandra Harder and Bill Young, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Department of Transport: The Hon. David Collenette, Minister; From the Department of Industry: The Hon. John Manley, Minister of Industry.

Witness(es):From the Department of Transport: Ted Cherrett, Director General; From the Canadian Transportation Agency: Marian Robson, Chairman; Gavin Currie, Director General; From the Department of Industry: Mary Frances Laughton, Chief, Assistives Devices Industry Office.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(c) study of matters relating to the proposing, promoting, monitoring and assessing of initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian Society

It was agreed that the list of questions submitted by Wendy Lill be translated, circulated to all members and forwarded to Minister Pettigrew for his response.

At 3:48 p.m. Minister Collenette and Marian Robson made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:40 p.m., Larry McCormick moved, that the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities approve the proposed budget of $28,500 for the period of April 1, 1999 to June 30, 1999 and that the Chair be authorized to present the said budget to the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

After debate, the question being put it was agreed to.

At 4:45 p.m. Minister Manley made a statement and with the other witness answered questions.

At 5:37 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
