MINUTES OF PROCEEDING
(Meeting No. 31)

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met jointly with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade in camera at 11:15 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chairs, Robert Bertrand and Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Pat O’Brien and John O’Reilly.

Acting Members present: Monique Guay for Pierrette Venne.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Bill Graham, Sarkis Assadourian, Colleen Beaumier, Ted McWhinney, Julian Reed, Bob Speller, Maud Debien and Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Rear Admiral James A. King, Director General, International Security Policy and Colonel Scott Cameron, Director, Medical Services. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Heinbecker, Assistant Deputy Minister, Global and Security Policy; and Paul Dingledine, Director General, Middle East and North Africa Bureau.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the Role of the Canadian Forces in the current Iraqi Crisis.

Paul Heinbecker made an opening statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:20 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
