Meeting No. 121

Tuesday, June 1st, 1999

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met jointly with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade in a televised session at 3:20 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Gordon Earle, René Laurin, Pat O'Brien and David Pratt.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Bill Graham, Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Sheila Finestone, Bernard Patry, Julian Reed, Bob Speller, Bob Mills and André Bachand.

Associate Member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Keith Martin.

Acting Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Monique Guay for Daniel Turp and Pat Martin for Svend Robinson.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Corinne McDonald and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers. From Committees and Legislative Services: Janice Hilchie, Committee Clerk.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lt-Gen Raymond R. Henault, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Jim Wright, Director General for Central East and South Europe. From Parliamentary Delegation to Macedonia: Bill Graham, M.P.; Bob Mills, M.P.; René Laurin, M.P.; Pat Martin, M.P..

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its examination of the situation in Kosovo. (See Minutes of Proceedings of March 31, 1999, Meeting No. 99.)

At 3:17 p.m., Jim Wright and Lt-Gen Raymond Henault each made an opening statement and answered questions.

René Laurin gave notice of the following motion, read as follows:

"- That the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs meet on Thursday, June 3, 1999 from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m., for a briefing on the decision, to be handed down on Wednesday, June 2, 1999 by the International Court of Justice, in the case of Yugoslavia v. Canada".

At 4:18 p.m., Bill Graham, Bob Mills, René Laurin and Pat Martin made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
