Meeting No. 116

Thursday, May 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met jointly with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade at 3:19 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chairs, Pat O'Brien and Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hec Clouthier, Jim Hart, René Laurin, Pat O'Brien and David Pratt.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Bill Graham, Sheila Finestone, and Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lt-Gen Raymond R. Henault, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, OP ABACUS. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Jim Wright, Director General for Central East and South Europe. From Canadian International Development Agency: Charles Bassett, Vice-President, Central and Eastern Europe Branch. From Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Jeff LeBane, Director General, International Relations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its examination of the situation in Kosovo. (See Minutes of Proceedings of March 31, 1999, Meeting No. 99.)

Lt-Gen Raymond R. Henault, Jim Wright, Jeff LeBane and Charles Bassett made opening statements and answered questions.

At 4:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
