MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 103

Thursday, April 22, 1999

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Peter Goldring, René Laurin, Judi Longfield, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, David Pratt, John Richardson and Bob Wood.

Acting Members present: Peter Stoffer for Gordon Earle and Elsie Wayne for David Price.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Merchant Navy Coalition for Equality: Allan MacIsaac, President, Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association; Captain Tom Brooks, Deputy Master, Ottawa/Hull Division, Company of Master Mariners of Canada; Captain Peter Ady, National Counsellor, Company of Master Mariners of Canada; Captain Miriam Van Roosmalen, Director, Ottawa/Hull Division, Company of Master Mariners of Canada.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Veterans Issues.

Allan MacIsaac and Captain Tom Brooks made opening statements and, with Captain Peter Ady and Captain Miriam Van Roosmalen, answered questions.

René Laurin moved, - That the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs organize information sessions on a regular basis on the situation in Kosovo, particularly on the military aspects of Canada's participation in NATO actions in the Balkans.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was negatived by a show of hands.

At 11:04 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
