Wednesday, November 4, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 4:34 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Chuck Cadman, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, John Reynolds, Jacques Saada.

Acting Member present: Real Menard for Michel Bellehumeur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

From the Committees and Legislative Services Directorate: Suzanne Verville, Legislative Clerk.

Appearing: Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: Don Piragoff, General Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Jacques Lemire, Counsel, International Assistance Group.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, October 20, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-40, an Act respecting extradition, to amend the Canada Evidence Act, the Criminal Code, the Immigration Act and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act and to amend and repeal other Acts in consequence (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, November 3, 1998, Issue No. 95).

The Minister made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
