MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

MEETING No. 74

Monday, May 25, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Nick Discepola, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, Jack Ramsay and Andrew Telegdi.

In attendance : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst and Nancy Holmes, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs: Guy Goulard, Commissioner; Denis Guay, Deputy Commissioner.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, April 21, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-37, An Act to amend the Judges Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings of Monday, May 11, 1998, Meeting No. 67).

Guy Goulard answered questions.

At 4:24 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 16:26 p.m., the sitting resumed, Shaughnessy Cohen took the Chair.

The Committee proceeded to consideration of the votes for 1998-99.
