MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

MEETING No. 73

Thursday, May 14, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Nick Discepola, Sheila Finestone, Paul E. Forseth, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay and John McKay.

Acting Member present: Howard Hilstrom for Garry Breitkreuz.

Other Member present: Beth Phinney.

In attendance : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Security Intelligence Review Committee : The Hon. Paule Gauthier, P.C., O.C., Q.C., Chair; the Hon. James Andrews Grant, P.C., Q.C., Member; the Hon. Bob Rae, P.C., Q.C., Member.

In accordance with its Order of Reference of Thursday, February 26, 1998, the Committee resumed its consideration of the Main Estimates for 1998-1999 (See Minutes of Proceedings, Monday, April 20, 1998, Issue No. 50).

By unanimous consent, the Chair called vote 40, under PRIVY COUNCIL.

Paule Gauthier made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
