The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Acting Chair, Sheila Finestone presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Sheila Finestone, Paul E. Forseth, Derek Lee, John Maloney and John McKay.
Acting Member present: Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral for Michel Bellehumeur.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Nancy Holmes, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Human Rights Commission: Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay, Chair; Bill Pentney, General Counsel; John Hucker, Secretary General. From the Canadian Council with Disabilities : Hugh Scher, Chairperson, Human Rights Committee; Lucie Lemieux-Brossard, Member.
Pursuant to its order of reference dated February 11, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill S-5, An Act to amend the Canada Evidence Act and the Criminal Code in respect of persons with disabilities, to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act in respect of persons with disabilities and other matters and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, March 12, 1998, meeting No. 39).
Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay made a statement and, with Bill Pentney, answered questions.
At 10:16 a.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 10:23 a.m., the sitting resumed.
Hugh Scher and Lucie Lemieux-Brossard made a statement and answered questions.
At 11:29 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
